Origin competing with Steam can only be good for gamers. If it takes off Valve will have to change Steam, the way it works and its pricing structure to keep customers using the service. The result is better games on either service, better bundles, sales and offers. It’s win, win , win. As amazing a service Steam is, it has given Valve a monopoly over the digital market.
They are the largest provider of digital distributed games on the PC and as a result they can dictate how the market works. While this is not currently an issue it could eventually become one if Valve turn around and decide to raise their prices, change their DRM policies, etc. I am not saying they will because Valve is one of those companies that has a “don’t be evil” policy and it tends to stick with it. Like I said Origin can only serve to improve Steam and vice versa. Saying EA are being greedy and evil is a mute point when you consider amount of money and control Valve currently has in the PC market.
The same can be applied to Battlefield 3 Vs Modern Warfare 3. If BF3 is a hit it will cause Activision to change how they approach and make Call of Duty games. Personally I am interested in how Origin will hopefully grow and change over time. If it flops, it flops. But if it is a hit. Then things will get interesting.
